Apple have just announce the iPhone for UK. The operator of choice for Apple is O2 but it doesn’t come cheap. Here is a a summary of the details:

EDGE and GPRS support Deal with Cloud for 7,500 WIFI hotspots in the UK iTunes activation possible like the US So in total for the iPhone and the min price plan for 18 months will cost u £1260.
